The Garsfontein Road upgrade and local streets

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is carrying out a 30-month upgrade of Garsfontein Road (K50) to support the Mooikloof Mega City development, Rekord reported in April 2026. The finished road will be a divided four-lane road between January Masilela Drive and Loristo Street, with pedestrian lanes. The department said extra teams would patch potholes and remove rubble on sections outside the construction zone.

Away from the main road, Rekord reported in November 2025 that residents of Garsfontein, Moreleta Park and Equestria were demanding action on deteriorating roads. The metro said much of the damage needs full resurfacing, not patching, because water gets in during heavy rain and patched sections fail again. Rubble, construction vehicles and failing patches all put loose stone on the road.

A chip now or a windscreen later

With road works and loose stone around, the most common Garsfontein job is likely to start as a chip. Deal with it early. A small chip outside the driver's line of sight can often be filled with resin, which stops it spreading and keeps the original factory seal. A chip left alone can run into a crack on a hot day, after a cold car wash, or when a wheel drops into a pothole.

Put clear tape over a fresh chip to keep dirt and water out until it is seen to, and avoid blasting the demister straight at it. Then start with windscreen chip repair in Garsfontein.

When it has gone too far

If the damage is already a long crack, sits in the driver's view or reaches the edge of the glass, a repair is usually not possible. See windscreen replacement in Garsfontein. A quote for a new screen depends on several things, none of which is the suburb itself:

  • The exact screen for your vehicle, which often comes down to the VIN.
  • Cameras, rain or light sensors, heating or an acoustic layer in the glass.
  • The glass tier you choose and whether it is in stock nearby.
  • Whether the camera behind the screen needs recalibration.
  • Your insurer's glass excess, if you are claiming.

Frequently asked questions

Will my insurer pay for a chip repair?

Many comprehensive policies include glass cover, often with its own excess, and some insurers pay for chip repairs in full. Check your own policy or call your insurer before booking.

Can I claim from the roads department for damage on Garsfontein Road?

You can ask. Photograph the damage and the spot, note the date and time, and ask the road authority how to lodge a claim. Most drivers find it quicker to claim through their own insurer.

Is it safe to drive with a chip until it is repaired?

A small chip outside the driver's view is usually safe for a short time, but it can spread without warning. Have it seen to soon.
