What is hard on windscreens in the east

The N1 Eastern Bypass runs down the western side of this area, with interchanges at Lynnwood Road, Atterbury Road and Garsfontein Road. Freeway speeds and heavy vehicles are a bad mix for glass. Arrive Alive names stones and debris thrown from truck loads, and loose material from road works, as the most common cause of windscreen damage.

The suburban roads add their own risk. In November 2025 Rekord reported residents of Moreleta Park, Garsfontein and Equestria demanding action on roads such as De Villebois Mareuil and Dam. The metro's spokesperson said many of the damaged roads need full resurfacing, and that water getting in during heavy rain makes patched sections fail again and again. Broken patches leave loose stone on the road, and loose stone is what chips a windscreen.

Roadworks on the main routes

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is running a 30-month upgrade of Garsfontein Road (K50), which Rekord reported in April 2026. When it is finished the road will be a divided four-lane road between January Masilela Drive and Loristo Street. Until then, drivers share the road with construction traffic, narrowed lanes and rubble.

Atterbury Road has also seen work for the A Re Yeng bus rapid transit route, including resurfacing between Lynnwood Road and Justice Mahomed Street in 2024. Keep a longer following distance through any work zone. It is the cheapest windscreen protection there is.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fitter come to my office in Menlyn or my home in Moreleta Park?

Many fitment businesses offer mobile fitment, but it depends on the job, the weather and where the car is parked. Say where the car will be when you enquire and the fitter will tell you whether it can be done there or needs a fitment centre.

I hit a pothole on Garsfontein Road and a chip turned into a crack. Is that common?

A jolt or a sudden temperature change can make an existing chip spread. Once a crack runs long or into the driver's view, a repair is usually no longer an option and the screen needs replacing.

Does the roadworks contractor pay for my windscreen?

Not automatically. If you believe road works caused the damage, photograph the scene and the damage and ask the road authority how to lodge a claim. Most drivers claim through their own insurer, so check your policy's glass cover.
