Established streets and slow repairs

Waterkloof is one of Pretoria's older, established eastern suburbs, on the hills south-east of the city centre. Its roads show their age in places. In June 2025 Rekord reported that a Waterkloof resident had repaired a pothole outside his home on Sidney Street himself, two months after reporting it to the metro. He said cars drove through it nonstop and you could hear the thud from inside the house. Other residents in the same report complained that freshly repaired potholes reappeared within weeks.

A pothole that keeps coming back does what all of them do: it scatters stone, and it jolts the car hard enough to spread an existing chip.

Summer brings a different risk. On 1 December 2025 Rekord reported that golf-ball-sized hail had damaged homes and cars across Pretoria overnight, leaving shattered windows and dented panels. Hail damage to glass is usually claimed on comprehensive cover, and insurers can be slow after a big storm, so report it early and keep photos of the damage.

Cameras, sensors and calibration

If your car has driver-assist features, look behind the rear-view mirror. A camera housing there means the windscreen is part of the safety system. Lane keeping, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise and collision warning can all depend on it. After a new screen goes in, most manufacturers require the camera to be recalibrated, because its aim changes even with careful fitting.

Ask how the calibration will be done and how you will know it worked, and read ADAS calibration in Waterkloof before you book. For the glass itself, see windscreen replacement in Waterkloof.

The shortcut to watch for

SAMBRA, part of the RMI, has published a case where a fitter took the camera sensor off an old screen, glued it onto a substitute screen and painted over the area. Screens built for cameras have the correct mounting bracket and optical area. Ask for the glass to be named on the quote and check that the camera is mounted in a factory-style bracket.

SAWRA, a private industry association, publishes fitment and ADAS standards that some fitters work to. It is an industry body, not a regulator, but asking a fitter which standard they follow is a fair question.

Frequently asked questions

Is calibration always needed after a windscreen replacement?

Only if the car has a camera or sensor that uses the windscreen. If it does, most manufacturers require recalibration. Your owner's manual or the fitter can confirm.

Should I insist on original glass for a premium car?

Not necessarily, but the replacement must match the original's features, including the camera bracket, heating and any acoustic layer. Ask what is being offered and why.

What happens if the camera is not calibrated?

The driver-assist systems may warn you, switch off, or work less accurately without warning. That is why calibration should be confirmed, not assumed.
