Why Centurion windscreens take a beating

The N1 Eastern Bypass begins at the Brakfontein interchange in Centurion and heads north-east past the Flying Saucer interchange with the highway to OR Tambo. The Ben Schoeman (N1 and N14) carries traffic between Pretoria and Johannesburg. A large share of Centurion driving is therefore at freeway speed, next to trucks, which is exactly the setting Arrive Alive links to stone and debris damage.

The Gautrain runs through on a long viaduct between the John Vorster N1 interchange and the Jean Avenue N14 interchange, with Centurion station near Centurion Lake. Many people drive to the station and park, so the car you need fixed may be sitting in a commuter parking area during the day.

Sinkhole repairs and detours

Centurion has a well-reported sinkhole problem. In July 2026 Rekord reported the metro had repaired five of seven delayed sinkholes, including sites in Die Hoewes, Lyttelton Manor, Valhalla and Erasmia, and had added new sites to its programme. Repair sites mean closed lanes, detours and loose material on the road, so take extra care around them.

Rekord also reported that two of the remaining sites had stalled because the metro could not trace the property owners to get access. Expect some of these work zones to stay in place for a while, and drop your speed through them.

Estates and newer vehicles

Much of Centurion is security estates and office parks. If you want mobile fitment at home or at work, the fitter may need a gate pass, a visitor booking or permission from the building manager. Arrange that before the appointment.

Many newer cars carry a camera behind the windscreen for lane keeping and collision warning. Most manufacturers require that camera to be recalibrated after a new screen goes in. See ADAS calibration in Centurion.

Frequently asked questions

Can my windscreen be done while the car is parked at the Gautrain station?

Possibly, but commuter parking areas have their own rules and the fitter needs space and suitable conditions. Ask when you enquire. Home or work is usually easier to arrange.

Is a chip from the N1 worth repairing?

Often, yes. A small chip outside the driver's view can usually be filled, which keeps the original screen and its factory seal. Leave it and it may spread into a crack.

Will a new windscreen affect my car's safety systems?

If the car has a camera behind the windscreen, yes. Ask whether recalibration is included in the quote and how it will be confirmed.
